Ohanaeze Ndigbo has frowned over the killing of people in Ebonyi State by suspected herdsmen and warned that the region would not tolerate such any longer.
Attack by rampaging herdsmen, who invaded Egedegede, Obegu and Amuzu communities in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, last Monday evening, left a Methodist priest and 17 others dead.
The herdsmen reportedly invaded a community in Ebonyi State again days after and kidnapped no less than four persons.
But the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, led by Professor George Obiozor, said that the killings in Ebonyi was “senseless and gruesome.”
This was contained in a statement issued by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia this weekend.
Ohanaeze said it owed it a duty to condemn violence anywhere in Nigeria.
“The Igbo cannot fold their arms while being massacred. The Igbo love for peace is not in doubt but will not allow persons or groups to take undue advantage of the Igbo discipline, fortitude, hospitality and decent civilisation.
“I still urge the Igbo youths to beat a retreat. The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo World-Wide, Ambassador Prof. George Obiozor is most disturbed about all these and has assured that the siege scenario in Igbo land cannot continue,” the statement read in part.
